Ten minutes,
no special tools.

Fitting memory is the easiest upgrade in a PC. These are the steps that actually matter — including the two that people skip and then regret.

Fitting the kit.

  1. Power off — properlyShut down the operating system, switch the power supply off at its rear switch, and unplug the mains cable. Hold the power button for five seconds to drain residual charge.
  2. Deal with staticWork on a hard surface, not carpet. Before touching the module, touch the bare metal of the case — that equalises you with the machine. Hold modules by their edges; keep fingers off the gold contacts.
  3. Open the clipsPress the retention clips at the ends of the memory slot outward. Many current boards latch only at the top end — one clip is normal; open whichever ones exist.
  4. Pick the right slotsWith two modules on a four-slot board, the manual's diagram wins — on most boards the pair belongs in slots 2 and 4 counting from the CPU. Two modules sharing a channel instead of splitting across both costs you dual channel.
  5. Align the notchThe notch in the module's contact edge matches a key in the slot, and it is off-centre — the module only fits one way round. If it resists, it is reversed or the wrong generation; never force it. (DDR4 and DDR5 are keyed differently on purpose — check compatibility if unsure.)
  6. Press until the clips snapSeat the module vertically and press down firmly on both ends at once. It takes more force than feels polite. The clips rotating closed and clicking into the module's side notches is the confirmation; half-seated memory is the single most common cause of a no-boot.
  7. First boot — be patientReconnect, power on. DDR5 systems (and some DDR4 boards after a memory change) run "memory training" on first boot: the screen can stay black for one to several minutes, possibly with a restart or two. This is normal. Do not power off mid-training.
  8. Enable the profile and verifyEnter BIOS/UEFI (usually Del or F2 at power-on) and enable XMP, EXPO or DOCP — one setting, typically on the first screen. Save and reboot. Then confirm in the OS: Windows Task Manager → Performance → Memory should show the full capacity, and the BIOS screen shows the running speed. What the profiles are is covered in the buying guide.

Troubleshooting

It won't boot.

Almost always seating or slot order, almost never a dead module. Work down this list; each step takes two minutes.

1 — Reseat

Power off at the wall, remove both modules, refit them with firm pressure until every clip clicks. This alone resolves the majority of "dead" installs.

2 — One stick, then swap

Boot with a single module in the manual's first-priority slot. Works? Add the second. If one specific module fails in a slot where the other works, note which — that is exactly what a warranty claim needs.

3 — Slots and CMOS

Confirm the slot pairing against the manual's diagram (usually 2 and 4 from the CPU). Still nothing: clear CMOS (button, jumper, or battery out for a minute) to drop stale memory settings, and allow DDR5 its training time.
